Psalm 24:7β10 (ESV)
7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
The picture is of a king returning from the battlefield victorious over the enemy. Open the gates and celebrate the mighty and victorious king. However, this psalm is not about an earthly king, but the King of glory. It is the Lord who is mighty and strong in battle. It is the Lord who is victorious over the enemy. “Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!”
We serve the mighty King and we know he is victorious over all. Just read the end of your Bibles for a description of the final battles. Jesus inflicted the fatal wound at the cross and the final battles will be won when Christ returns. However, we can already celebrate because Jesus is risen and reigns even now!
