Psalm 136:1 (ESV)
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Ever since the beginning, God’s goodness has been questioned. This was the tact taken by the cunning serpent in Genesis 3 when he questioned the woman with the words, “Did God actually say…?” The intent was to cast doubt on God’s goodness, not figure out the content of the Lord’s commands. This is why the word “actually” is important.
The Bible makes it clear that God is good. He is not trying to deprive us of happiness by restricting us. He loves us and wants what is best for us. He created a good creation for us and gave us all we needed to thrive. We are the ones who have taken a different road, chosen to reject God, sinned, and brought all of the consequences of sin into our lives.
It is just like us to question God’s goodness when we are the ones to blame! However, God has made it abundantly clear that he is love and he is good because even in our sin and rebellion, he has lavished grace upon mankind. He has given his Son as a sacrifice for our sin so that we can be saved. Even after all we have done, God has continued to reach out to us with open arms. He is good.
