2 Samuel 11:26–27 (ESV) – 26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. 27 And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
David did all he could to cover up his adulterous affair. He thought he had succeeded since he had eliminated the husband and had taken in Bathsheba as his wife. Now, no one would ever know. But someone did know. The most important One knew. God knew and this matter “displeased the Lord”.
We can never cover our sin. We may try to hide it from other people. We may even succeed in doing that, but we can never hide our sin from the all-knowing and all-seeing God. It is God that we will ultimately answer to. He is the final Judge. Unfortunately, we have all failed. We have all sinned and stand condemned. Thankfully, God is a merciful and gracious Judge who forgives those who repent and of their sin and turn to Jesus Christ, the One who took our punishment on himself. We have all displeased the Lord, but he stands ready to pardon.
