James 1:17 (ESV)
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

We have been looking for several days at the attributes of God as often defined by theologians. Today, we look at the last of these. The term that is often used to describe God’s unchangeable nature is immutable. It means that God, in his nature or character or will does not change. It does not mean that God cannot begin or end an activity, nor does it mean that our relationship with God cannot grow over time.

It is a wonderful truth that God is unchanging. How would we relate to him if his will were in constant flux? What is he said one thing today and decided something else tomorrow? As James tells us, with God “there is no variation or shadow due to change.” And as Hebrews tells us concerning Christ, he is the “same yesterday, today, and forever.” We can trust God and serve him because we know he does not change and never will. All praise to him!
