This post is part of the series The Names of God.
Isaiah 40:28 (ESV) — 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Here we read that YHWH (the LORD) is El Olam (the everlasting God). The passage focuses on God’s role as the Creator of all things. As Creator, he existed beforehand. He is the eternal One without beginning or end. As Aristotle noted, God is the unmoved mover. He is the original cause that sets all things in motion.
What an amazing thing to contemplate. How can anything be eternal? Yet that is exactly what God is. Isaiah asks, “Have you not know? Have you not heard?” Do you know the eternal God? He has spoken to us through his word so that we might know him. Grab a Bible and begin to understand who the everlasting God is. You will not be disappointed!
