Reading the Word
Luke 1:34–35 (ESV) — 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
Understanding and Applying the Word
Mary wondered how she could be pregnant when she was a virgin. Not only was the announcement of a coming baby spectacular because of the identity of the baby, but how could it even be possible? The angel answered Mary’s question by telling her that this baby would be born through the power of the Holy Spirit. And this is the same Spirit who was at work when the entire world was created out of nothing. A virgin birth would be no issue for the power of God.
The virgin birth is a doctrine that causes many to doubt. They doubt because such a thing seems impossible, but this is not true if God truly exists. In fact, if God exists, such a thing would be no problem at all. As believers, we can acknowledge that this was an amazing thing. It should also encourage us that the same Spirit is at work in every single one of us. His great power is moving within every believer to bring us to Christian maturity and also to help us serve others in the love of Christ. What an amazing truth!
