A House of Strife

Reading the Word

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.(Proverbs 21:9, ESV)

Understanding and Applying the Word

This is a surprising passage. It is a bit funny, but also a bit shocking! Don’t miss the truth that is being communicated. Quarreling and fighting will destroy relationships and make everyone miserable. The corner of a housetop, alone and isolated, is better than living in a house with constant fighting.

There are two things we can take away. The first is that we need to be careful about who we marry. If your pre-marriage relationship is marked by strife, you may want to think again. The second thing is that if you are in a marriage with much fighting, you need to work to address the issue before it destroys the relationship. What is the cause? What can be done to help? Never be afraid or ashamed to reach out for help. A pastor, a mature couple, or a Christian counselor would be places to begin.
