Reading the Word
Psalm 57:7–11 (ESV)
7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! 8 Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! 9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
Understanding and Applying the Word
Christianity is not about getting everything our hearts desire. Certainly, there are some who treat it this way. They think if they believe hard enough or pray the right way that God will grant health and wealth. This is not the teaching of Scripture.
God’s word tells us that we live in a world cursed by sin. As a result, we have the realities of things including pain, suffering, sickness, and death. All of us face these things, including the finest Christians. However, there is hope. God has promised to cleanse the world of sin and there will be a new heaven and a new earth where the suffering and sorrow of this world are no more.
When we face difficulty and trouble in this life, we do not lose heart and search for new answers. God’s word has not failed. No! We cry out with David: “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast!” We continue to trust in our faithful God who keeps his promises. Let us praise his name!
