Reading the Word
Psalm 34:11–16 (ESV)
11 Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
Understanding and Applying the Word
What is the secret of a good life? Is it acquiring wealth? May be it is having power? Perhaps it is having a large number of friends? Or is it having great influence?
Psalm 34 tells us that it is fearing God and living a righteous life. This means that we live the right way. We live our lives according to God’s way. This makes sense. After all, God did create us and, as the Designer, knows what is best for us. When we live according to his word we find the good life.
Many assume that Christians give up the good things of life and look for the reward in heaven. This is simply not the case. When we live for God, we find the greatest joy and fulfillment possible. We find true life.
