Reading the Word

Psalm 16:7–11 (ESV)

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Understanding and Applying the Word

Have you ever known someone that you just loved to spend time with? It may have been a close friend or a family member. That person just brought joy.

God brings joy to the believer. Not only joy, but fullness of joy. He brings pleasures forevermore. He does this by being present with us and by being a support to us. This does not mean that we will not face difficulties, but that he will be with us in the tough times. And he will not abandon us. Even in death he is there with us and promises to give life to the one who trusts in the salvation he offers through his Son, Jesus Christ. For the believer, there is fullness of joy because we will forever be in the presence of the loving God who redeemed us.
