Reading the Word
1 Peter 4:7–11 (ESV)
7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Understanding the Word
The end of all things is at hand. How many times have you heard that in your lifetime? It seems like an odd statement from Peter. However, in truth, the end has been at hand since Christ left this earth and promised to return. We wait expectantly for that day, which could happen at any moment.
Applying the Word
What would you do if you knew the end was near? Spend your last moments fulfilling as much pleasure as you could? Spend as much time with loved ones as possible?
God’s word tells us what our focus should be: love. We should love one another earnestly through serving one another and using the things God has blessed us with for the benefit of others. Sadly, not many of us think this way. Instead we seek to put ourselves first in every situation.
Well, Peter tells us that the end is near. Soon we will stand before our God and Savior. Let us seek to honor him by loving one another until the time is complete.
