The Attributes of God: Unchanging

James 1:17 (ESV)
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

God is unchanging. Another word for this that you may have heard is “immutable”. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This does not mean that he does not feel or have emotion, as some mistakenly argue. Scripture describes God as one who gets angry or sad with the actions of mankind. He is also pleased and joyful.

When we think of God as unchanging, it gives us great assurance. We can know that the promises he has made are forever. We can trust in him because he does not change, unlike people who change their minds and personalities and views over time. The God we worship today is the same God that walked in the garden with Adam and Eve. He is the same God who called Abraham and appeared to Moses in the burning bush. He is the same God that David worshiped. He has not changed and he never will. And that is an amazing truth about God that we do not think about often enough!
