The Attributes of God: Spirit

John 4:24 (ESV)
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

God is spirit. This statement is in contrast to the many gods of other religions who were depicted in images of stone or wood or some other physical representation. The true God is spirit. Christians do not set up images of God to worship as in doing so, it would detract from the perfections of God and would cause us to forget that God is wholly other. He is not a part of this created world, but is the Unmoved Mover.

One of the grandest statements in all of Scripture is that God, in the person of Jesus Christ, stepped into this world as a man.

John 1:14–18 (ESV)14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Let’s take today to think on the wonder of what the incarnation of Jesus Christ meant so long ago and still means today: God has visited us!
